| "This vocal ensemble is the best prepared I've had on this tour - excellent!" -Kenny Loggins, Recording Artist "It was a pleasure to work with Dr. Vicki Burrichter. Vicki took on the task of my running my huge concert without hesitation and took control in such an understated way that she not only made the orchestra feel well taken care of but also left me feeling completely secure. Her command of the orchestra, choir and band was astounding and the respect went both ways. I hope to work with Dr. Vicki again!" -Denise Gentilini, Emmy Award winning composer "Vicki Burrichter is simply one of the most superb choral conductors I have ever seen." - Dr. Ofer Ben-Amots, Co-Chair, Colorado College Dept. of Music Photo by Carl Studna I have worked with Dr. Burrichter for over a decade as an accompanist and composer/arranger, and I have watched countless lives changed by her great heart and monumental talent – mine included. Dr. Burrichter’s powerful conducting style draws equally from her musical artistry and her artistry with people. She can instantly develop rapport with a choir with her warmth and humor, instantly gain respect with her musical knowledge and masterful singing voice, and instantly motivate with a fiery passion and genuine love for the people she stands in front of. Within a few minutes, she has the choir eating out of her hand, trying harder, singing bigger, taking more risks, and trusting totally in her direction. Because of the time she devotes to vocal pedagogy, her choirs consistently show excellence in intonation, vowel matching, dynamic contrast, musicianship, and power. This is true for every choir – whether at the professional, college, church or community level. And because each choir member feels seen and heard by Dr. Burrichter, each one takes pride in and responsibility for his or her own musical preparedness and vocal sound. Her respect for her singers is matched only by a respect for the music. I remember vividly an evening when a choir preparing to sing Beethoven’s Ninth sat in rapt attention as she told the story of Beethoven’s life and genius. I remember watching a movie depicting Joan of Arc’s last days, in preparation for a moving, but little-known piece her professional choir was to sing about the historical figure. Even in the rush of preparing for performance, Dr. Burrichter always finds time to inspire and to remind her choirs why. Why we sing, why we make music, why music is important, and why every moment making music together is sacred. Vicki Burrichter creates intimacy in an organization. She remembers the names of her singers, her instrumentalists, and her A/V people. Each person on the musical “team” is encouraged to bond and love each other like family, with Vicki providing the primary example. Her choirs laugh, cry, rehearse, fail, and succeed -- together. The result is love on a large scale that can be heard from the rafters. Instrumentalists respect Dr. Burrichter. She is easy to follow, telegraphs tempo and dynamics naturally, is completely without ego, and carries an encyclopedic knowledge of music theory and the great players of every instrument. Players feel her respect for what it takes to be good, and the respect is returned. “What do you need from me?” is a frequent question she is not afraid to ask. She treats her accompanists and all instrumentalists as partners in the task of making music. One of the first things she ever said to me was, “Please tell me what you think. I’m not smart enough to do this job alone.” It was revealing of her humility and collaborative leadership. Directors like that get everything people can give.
Audiences love Dr. Burrichter. She is a warm and witty emcee. Her eclectic tastes are reflected in her programming so that concerts are entertaining, educational, and surprising. She balances the soul-comforting with the soul-confronting, old favorites with interesting pieces never performed before. She is a composer’s dream come true, with a commitment to historical accuracy, to uncovering and shining light on new compositions, and to keeping all kinds of music alive. When she has performed my music, I have been amazed at her uncanny sense of musical intention. She knows what the composer wants, what the audience wants, what the singers are dying for, and most importantly, what works. Her loving feedback and encouragement have given many a composer (including me) the freedom to experiment and hone their craft. Dr. Burrichter’s gifts are obviously perfectly suited to her work as conductor, performer, and vocal coach. But few conductors have her managerial skills and ability to orchestrate large and complex events. She solicits opinions and has a healthy tolerance for conflict. Leading always with her heart, she is bold in making difficult or unpopular decisions if she thinks it is for the greater good. She has a sixth-sense about where people’s gifts lie, whether organizing, planning events, negotiating, governing, fundraising, or fun-raising! Her complete faith and confidence in others’ good sense and judgment builds talent. In short, her greatest talent may be finding and leveraging others’ talents to move enormous projects forward. Vicki Burrichter is good, through and through. You can say a lot of things about someone, but that is the one that is the most rare and golden. Talent in these hands is a gift from God. - Tami Meise, Composer, Arranger, Accompanist; Denver, CO Vicki Burrichter brings creativity and positive energy towards her role as performer, conductor, and teacher. Equipped with a strong pedagogical foundation and superb musicianship skills, she is always eager to share her knowledge with others in an engaging manner. As a singer in her choir, Canto Spiritus, for 3 years, she was constantly challenging herself and her singers with fresh, innovative ideas about programming and repertoire. I certainly grew as a singer and musician under her professional tutelage. -Scott Shively, Director of Vocal Music Denver School of the Arts Dr. Burrichter’s talents as a leader, teacher, mentor, and musician are exquisite. Through the years I have watched her grow in her craft to the professional level not often found outside of the major venues of New York and California. -Roxanne Thompson, Denver, CO I have had the privilege of singing with Dr. Vicki Burrichter for the last ten years, first as a singer in the Denver based chamber chorus Canto Spiritus, and then as Bass Section Leader of the Mile Hi Choir in Lakewood. Vicki’s conducting style is always clear and concise. She is able to convey exactly what she wants from singers and musicians in a way that is never demanding or dictatorial, but which involves the singers and musicians in making beautiful music together with her. She is able to move effortlessly between styles and types of accompaniment, and is just as at home with a jazz quartet as with a symphony orchestra. Being a trained singer herself, she is always acutely aware of the vocal challenges of a piece and very helpful in giving singers the proper techniques required to produce beautiful sounds without vocal strain. I have always found her rehearsals to be valuable and focused, with obvious preparation. She is able to keep the chorus focused as well without resorting to discipline or threats, and she maintains a very good disposition even in stressful situations. Dr. Vicki is also able to express and convey a love for the music and the process of making it which is palpable to those involved. She makes you want to sing and make music, and she gives you an appreciation for the privilege and honor of having that ability.
-Darrell Johnson, Denver, CO I have had the great pleasure of knowing Dr. Vicki Burrichter for much of the last decade. Throughout this period I was a member of a very large choir that she directs as well a several small ensembles. Additionally, I also have taken private vocal instruction from her. To put it simply, she is one of the most talented, intuitive, and creative musicians I have ever known. Working with Vicki is a passport to a wonderful journey of exploration, both of music and of self. She is challenging and encouraging at the same time, which is a rare combination indeed. But besides being a very gifted professional, she is also just a delightful person to know on a personal basis. Should you have the opportunity to study or sing with Dr. Burrichter, you will undoubtedly consider yourself as lucky as I do to have shared this growth experience.
-J. Eric Smith, Lakewood, Colorado "Dr. Vicki Burrichter was very adept at pulling all of the various facets of the project (vocal & instrumental soloists, choir, band and 40 piece chamber orchestra) together to make beautiful music with focus and direction. She also managed all of those same components during the limited rehearsal time available, making the most of the time to get everyone on the "same page" for the performance." -Ron Bland, Co-Contractor of the Colorado Chamber Orchestra Dr. Vicki Burrichter has been conducting choirs and orchestras since 1992. She received both a Doctorate (2003) and a Masters (1994) Degree in Choral Conducting and Literature (secondary: Orchestral Conducting and Literature), from the University of Northern Colorado, and also did post-baccalaureate studies at California Institute of the Arts. Her Bachelor's Degree is in Theater from Florida State University. Dr. Burrichter has conducted every type of choir: symphony chorus, chamber chorus, men's and women's glee clubs, jazz choir; and has worked in many choral settings: professional, university, high school and elementary school, community ensembles and church choirs. She has also conducted, as a guest or sub, the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, the Colorado Chamber Orchestra, the Littleton Symphony, the Lakewood Symphony and Musica Sacra Chamber Orchestra. Vicki has sung with, or studied under, many of the finest conductors in the world: Robert Shaw, Vance George, Duain Wolfe and Marin Alsop. Dr. Burrichter is well-known for founding ensembles and conducting large projects. For ten years, she was Artistic Director of Canto Spiritus, a semi-professional chamber chorus that won a Gold Medal at the New York Choral Festival (judged by Weston Noble and Moses Hogan). Canto Spiritus was the only chorus in the United States to record many of the pieces of Brazilian composer/arranger Marcos Leite. The CD that came out of this project, Brazil! The Choral Music of Marcos Leite, is available by contacting Dr. Burrichter on the "Contact Us" link above. Vicki brought the project Mary Lou's Mass to NEA Board Member, Cleo Parker Robinson, and her dance ensemble, where it was performed at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts to great acclaim in 2000 and 2004. She also conducted the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and 200 singers from around Colorado in Sing for the Cure in 2005, also at the DCPA.
